All About Me

Hi, I’m Rachel Hong, a sophomore (Class of 2027) at Carlmont High School, and this is my first year as a student journalist. By focusing on news and feature articles, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the people and stories that shape my school and community—and how powerful storytelling can be.

Most importantly, journalism has given me a voice. It allows me to explore topics I care about and raise awareness about important issues or events in my community. This collection represents not only my growth as a writer but also my passion for connecting with others through meaningful stories.

Outside of journalism, I love drawing and reading. Both give me a way to process the world around me, just like journalism does, through creativity, reflection, and storytelling.

My Story
I joined journalism in sophomore year because I’ve always been curious about the world and passionate about using my voice to make a difference. What started as an elective quickly turned into one of the most exciting and meaningful parts of my high school life. Journalism has opened the door to new opportunities and outside of my comfort zone—whether that’s interviewing people I’ve never met, covering complex issues, or meeting tight deadlines. Through this experience, I’ve become more independent, confident, and creative.

One of the things I love most about journalism is that it gives me the power to inform, inspire, and connect. I’ve written stories to raise awareness about social justice, education, environmental issues, and the people in my community who often go unheard. Every article I publish is a chance to make someone think, feel, or take action.

When I’m not writing, I love to draw, read, and explore stories through art. Visual storytelling is another outlet where I find joy and purpose—it’s how I see the world and express what matters to me. Whether it’s through a detailed illustration or a heartfelt article, I’m always trying to shine a light on something meaningful.

This portfolio is a collection of my work, growth, and voice. I hope you’ll find stories here that make you feel more informed, more aware, or more connected.
